Happy Thanksgiving!

.Happy Thanksgiving wishes from the turkeys in my new back yard. These birds are certainly thankful since they will not appear on a dinner plate any time soon. I suspected that they had turned into more pets for Wayne and Gayle to feed so I sent W&G home with a turkey that I had managed to buy for only 29 cents a pound! Okay, turkeys, you owe me one now!

Ok educate me, I know nothing about turkeys except they taste better with gravy. The poor pitiful looking ones without plumage, are they females or babies?

Happy Thanksgiving, ya ol' turkey farmer, you! :-)

(Even though I'm not quite sure five turkeys qualifies you for part of the farm subsidy, or farm "stimulus," or whatever the Hell it is they're calling it these days...)

Back at ya Lin...take care my friend.

Goddess, after my own heart - EVERYTHING goes better with gravy, lots of it!
What you're looking at is two toms and 3 jennies (or hens or whatever you want to call 'em).
Unlike humans (except for pimps), it's the male turkeys who get to strut the flashy looks. I lucked out with the photo since it was a warm day after a cold spell - they thought it was Spring and were out to impress the ladies at every chance.

Buck, today I noticed 6 turkeys so one must have been hiding the day I took that photo. BUT I have not begun to innumerate the critters here for you. Still, I doubt that I will qualify for any gov't hand-outs - doesn't seem to be in my Karma or something. Bet you can relate to that though.

Lin said...

Thanks, Pat, here's to a fine bird, game and cigars for ya tomorrow!

*Goddess* said...

I knew it! The plainer the bird, the more chance it's a female:(

Are the females full grown, though? Because they look downright scrawny next to the males.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Lin said...

Goddess, exactly right! Those three are adult females and much less impressive ... prettier faces though
(well, in that buzzardy sort of way).

BRUNO said...

True, but these MUST all be "domestic" turkeys, because the wild jakes and hens I've got here are a LOT bigger, especially the hens, even though they are, indeed, a lot less "flashy" than the males!

Lin said...

Bruno, now that you've reminded me, Pat the junk lady had a pair of wild turkeys out back and they DID seem bigger than these fellas. I bet hers didn't make it to the table either.

Turkeys scare the crap out of me, literally, that big gobbly bit. Hope you have a great holiday!

Happy Thanksgiving, Lin! Nice of you to pardon the turkeys...;)

Lin said...

Alex, those sudden turkey noises at volume set me on edge as well. Fortunately, they are considerably more quiet and agreeable after a good stint in the freezer.

Lin said...

A great Thanksgiving to you as well, Christina! The pardon wasn't exactly altruistic though - there WILL be some payback expected. I figure that if it worked for the last gazillion presidents, it might work for me as well. I know ... fat chance.

Once you name those things you'll never be able to look into their beady little loving eyes with thoughts of chopping off their heads. From now on it's tofurkey for you!

Canada had Thanksgiving over a month ago but I'm celebrating again today because I'm thankful to see your post, Lin, and to enjoy your wonderful humour. It's a great day!

Lin said...

Ohhhh noooo, Leah, not the dreaded tofurkey! There are some things that even a well-constructed gravy by the level cup will help! Of course, that can also be said about a number of gelatinous slurries formed into bricks that vaguely involved real critter parts.

I so wish you were here for your second TG of the year. Put it on your calendar for next year since I just might resurrect the Katlady's famous Orphan Dinners. Those were always such memorable events. sigh

Damn, turn my back for 4 days and a fresh post appears.

Good to see you back Lin and to meet some of your new friends, 29 cents a pound - you have been honing those long disused shopping skills!

And no terrorising the inmates with photos of their well roasted cousins :)

Hi Lin,

I just now saw your turkey post!

Turkeys are sure ugly birds in my opinion, and I am not sure I could eat one that I raised, but I really do love the frozen ones in the grocery store...and especially the golden brown juicy ones that come out of the oven.

I want to hear about the rest of the animals ... it sounds like you are living on a farmstead out there! Did the animals come with the house and property?

I hope you had a peaceful Thanksgiving Day, and I am sure thankful for you and what you mean to all of us.

P.S. Did it snow yesterday where you are? Looks downright pretty here today.

Lin said...

Hi DBA! I just had to do a TAG post with all these turkeys around - it was the only real incentive I had.

It's a very strange feeling to be out bargain shopping again, especially when completely alone. Terry had become very good at it however, in the last few years and I really miss playing hide and seek in the aisles and comparing our finds that once or twice a year when we would go shopping together.

Lin said...

Towanda, I figured you would be on the road this holiday. Did you have your first NM TG at your new place?

You will get a kick out of the rest of the critters here. Thankfully none are mine, nor are the ensuing feed bills! W&G moved to a new unfenced lot so they have to start from scratch with fences, shelters and pens. Gads, at this rate, the critters might be here for a LONG time. Well, at least that gives me plenty of time to take photos of them, I guess.

TG day brought dismal weather here.
No snow, just gray skies, light rains and dampness. Maybe, maybe a little snow overnight since I saw some remaining white alongside the shop just a bit ago.

Glad to know you answered OUR question as well -
"Thankfully none are mine, nor are the ensuing feed bills! W&G moved to a new unfenced lot so they have to start from scratch with fences, shelters and pens."
We were beginning to worry you were starting a new "hobby".
Hopefully your critters are doing okay with those.
Turkey for 29 cents a pound - ours went for 67 cents - you are a bargin hunter!
Look forward to new posts!
S & J

T'was the same dull gray story here on The High Plains, as well. Just enough rain to make the cars look leopard-like. But... today dawned bright and sunny, if a lil bit cool. But! It IS late Fall, innit? No complaints, coz complaining doesn't do any good, anyway. ;-)

Lin said...

S&J, right now I am so relieved that all these critters are not mine, you have no idea. W&G come down and feed them each day but I can't help but spoil the scrawny barn cats a little before winter sets in.

The Katlady said the best she could do in Fla was 89 cents a pound for turkey so I did well even though I think NM food prices generally run a speck higher.

Lin said...

Buck, does sound like the same yesterday and today at your end as well. We started off sunny and surprisingly warm but those clouds moved back in an hour ago and it's getting downright chilly out there again. That means no outdoors projects on the slate for the rest of the day. Hope you get to keep the warm and sunny at your end.

Just looking at turkeys makes me laugh- I wonder how anyone every thought of eating them? Yuck.

No turkeys living here, but goats, guineas, chickens and a dog do. Tell me about feed bills!

So good to hear from you. Happy Thanksgiving!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Lin said...

Phlegmmy, good point! Did someone also try vultures and find out that carrion eaters taste like their diet? And who's left to eat the vulture when it finally 'falls off the perch'?

Lin said...

Oh, A1, then you will probably like the rest of the critter tour here. I'm hoping that feed costs come down for you and W&G both then ... and soon!

Thanks for keeping an eye on me. Hope you have a great TG weekend!

Lin said...

Thanks, Mushy, you, too!

phlegmfatale said...

They DO look nasty and inedible.

Happy Turkey Day!!! It's sort of hard to eat something you've named, so I do suspect they will be pets.

Big hugs to you!

Turkey Day is a national day here. Apparently the Canucks feel the same way. (They just use an old style calendar, I guess.)
You will note, ladies (and gents) that not only are the MALE turkeys orettier, but that line of good looking runs through all the bird populations, (Look at robins, sparrows, eagles, etc., etc.) The male of the species is more attractive. Ahem. Don't bow, Lin. It's a fact of nature. The other fact I resent, this one, is that they are also larger and thus windup being first in the cook pot. Oh, well, you can't have it all.
I'm so glad to see any post from you, Lin. Thank you.

Catmoves said...

Oh, yeah, meant to tell you. You should have gone shopping with Wild Thing. She got our turkeys for 24 cents a pound. Smooch.

FHB said...

back at ya, late, as usual. And they do look a bit more like pets. Though, in a pinch...

I have an award for you over on my blogspot.

Lin said...

Hey, thanks Phlegmmy, Brigid, Margie, Cat, FHB and A1 !! I confess ... I've been in another writing slump - similar to "I've fallen and I can't get up!" And I am not happy with posting lots of photos and very little real writing. I need to take out the jumper cables or try to bump start something soon. Or as Monty Python would say "And now for something completely different." and then just hope that I don't get the "Poke in the eye with a sharp stick" prize.

Towanda said...

Maybe Cat's "men are the prettier gender in the bird world" would be a good jumping off place for a major response piece of writing.

haha

Lin said...

Hee-hee, Towanda, I'll not let that Cat's claw marks get me going ... unless he does them on my leather Chesterfield! Ya gotta figure that no one would appreciate a handsome bird like a Cat though.
